The double bass

People only consciously hear you the day you stop. The double bass supplies the fundamental that everyone else's harmony is built on: take it out and the whole thing sounds hollow without anyone knowing why. That is exactly your position in a group. You carry a huge, physically punishing instrument and you usually play without ever stepping forward. What you should hear: being indispensable and being recognised are two different things, and the second one isn't requested silently.
