You leave without knowing what you'll live on, you start your collective on the margins, and you look down on money questions a little too openly. The decade was built for you: countercultures, communes, the first mass environmental movement — the first Earth Day brought out roughly twenty million Americans in 1970. What would have ground you down: the economy slammed shut. The 1973 oil shock quadrupled the price of crude, double-digit inflation ate wages for years, and a great many of those communes dissolved in thoroughly ordinary fights about money and power. Add that everyone smoked indoors, nobody wore seatbelts and an international phone call cost a fortune. The freedom was real; the safety net wasn't.
