About this test

Most sports quizzes go stale in six months, because they are built on records and league tables. This one is built the other way round: every question has an answer that cannot change next year. Rules of play, official dimensions, founding dates — the things that still hold once the season is over and the standings have been shuffled.

The marathon distance is the perfect example of a fact frozen in place for bad reasons. The race is 42.195 kilometres not out of any concern for symmetry but because of the 1908 London Games: the course was lengthened so it could start at Windsor Castle and finish in front of the royal box inside the stadium. That awkward number was made official in 1921 and has not moved since.

Regulation dimensions often tell the same kind of story. A basketball hoop sits 3.05 metres up because James Naismith nailed two peach baskets to the balcony rail of the gym where he worked in 1891, which happened to be exactly ten feet. More than a century later, the whole world still plays at the height of a railing chosen at random.

How it works

Twenty questions with four options each, from basic rules to founding dates, with exactly one correct answer every time. No question depends on a recent result or a record that could be broken. The full breakdown appears at the end.
