About this test

A hundred billion euros means nothing. That's this game's central problem and its whole point. Our intuition for amounts stops somewhere around the price of a home: beyond that we push numbers around without feeling them, and a million looks like a billion even though it takes a thousand of the first to make the second.

The list deliberately runs from a three-euro coffee to a three-billion-euro aircraft carrier, a ratio of one to a billion. The prices are real orders of magnitude: a new compact car around twenty-two thousand, an eighty-metre yacht around two hundred and fifty million, a long-range business jet around seventy million. Nothing is inflated for effect.

Try the exercise honestly: start at the top of the list, then check what's left. Most players are surprised that emptying the account takes persistence rather than imagination.

How it works

Your score is the percentage of the budget you actually spent. You can buy any number of copies of each item and undo purchases at any time.
