About this test

This test requires no knowledge at all. Every question can be solved from the statement given, with a little method and some patience. That is also what makes it hard: there is nothing to recall, so there is no refuge when intuition goes wrong.

Four families of question follow one another. Syllogisms, where the trap is concluding more than the premises allow. Necessary and sufficient conditions, which separate "if" from "only if" — confusing the two is the most common reasoning error around, and it runs through public argument all day long. Truth-and-lie puzzles, solved by assuming each case and discarding the ones that contradict themselves. And finally elementary probability, some of which gives answers the brain spontaneously refuses.

One piece of method before you start: when an answer looks obvious, go looking for the counter-example. On this kind of test the immediate answer is wrong roughly half the time, and that is deliberate. Full corrections appear at the end.

How it works

Eighteen questions, one correct answer each, no timer. Your score is the percentage of correct answers. A detailed correction for every item appears once you submit.
