About this test

Everyday English runs on three to five thousand words. An educated speaker recognises around thirty thousand, and a full dictionary holds well over a hundred and seventy thousand entries in current use. The gap between what you understand and what you actually deploy is therefore vast, and this quiz lives precisely in that gap: the words you have read without ever checking.

One instructive case of drift is fulsome. Traditionally it meant "excessive to the point of insincerity" — fulsome praise was praise you should distrust. In modern usage it is increasingly used to mean generous and warm, the near-opposite. Dictionaries now record both, which is why the word remains a reliable trap in any vocabulary test.

The best advice for genuinely growing a lexicon: never learn a word alone. Record it inside the sentence where you met it, with its context. Memory stores words by syntactic neighbourhood, not by definition. Then use it once in writing within the week — a word used once is yours, a word merely read is gone.
