About this test

Capitals are the first thing anyone learns in geography and the first thing they forget, largely because they are memorised without context. Yet most of them follow a logic: a capital is rarely the country's largest city, because it was often chosen or purpose-built to defuse a rivalry between bigger places.

Brazil is the clearest case. Until 1960 the capital was Rio de Janeiro. The government then built Brasília from scratch in the middle of the central plateau, to pull power inland and populate the interior. The United States, Australia, Nigeria, Kazakhstan and Myanmar all followed the same territorial-compromise logic. Hence every trap in this quiz: Sydney, Istanbul, Lagos, Casablanca and Almaty are the best-known cities in their countries, and not one of them is a capital.

One habit beats all others for improving: learn capitals by region, never alphabetically. The brain holds on to "the five Central Asian capitals" far better than "five cities starting with A". And remember the inverse rule: when a city feels very familiar while the country does not, be suspicious — it is usually the wrong answer.
